Why a Rug Belongs in Every Bedroom
A good rug for the bedroom does more than look nice. It changes how the room feels. Here's why bedroom rugs are worth investing in:
Warmth and comfort underfoot
Hardwood, tile, and laminate floors are practical but cold first thing in the morning. A plush rug for the bedroom gives you that soft landing as soon as your feet hit the floor. The thicker the pile, the more cushioned the feel, which is why rugs in the bedroom are typically chosen for comfort first and aesthetics second.
Sound dampening and a quieter room
Rugs absorb sound. In a bedroom, that means less echo, less noise carrying through the house, and a calmer overall atmosphere. Particularly useful in apartments, upstairs bedrooms, or homes with hardwood floors throughout.
Defines the space
A well-sized bedroom rug anchors the bed and creates a visual frame. Without one, even a beautifully styled bedroom can feel a little unfinished. A rug ties the bed, side tables, and the rest of the furniture together into one cohesive look.
Adds colour, texture, and personality
The rug is often the largest soft furnishing in the room. It's an easy way to introduce a colour palette, a pattern, or a textural element without committing to repainting walls or replacing furniture.
Bedroom Rug Size Guide
Choosing the right size rug for your bedroom is the single most important decision you'll make. A rug that's too small will look disconnected from the bed and shrink the room. A rug that's too large can overwhelm the space. Here's a quick guide based on bed size:
Single bed (92cm x 188cm)
A 120 x 170cm rug works as an accent piece beside the bed, or a 160 x 230cm rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed gives a fuller look. Single bedroom rugs are also great for kids' rooms or guest bedrooms.
Double bed (138cm x 188cm)
A 160 x 230cm rug positioned under the lower two-thirds of the bed is the most popular choice. For a more generous look, step up to a 200 x 290cm rug that extends further around the sides.
Queen bed (153cm x 203cm)
A 200 x 290cm rug is the sweet spot for most queen-bed bedrooms. For larger master suites, a 240 x 340cm rug allows the rug to extend past the bedside tables for a luxurious, hotel-style look.
King bed (183cm x 203cm)
A 240 x 340cm rug is the recommended minimum for a king bedroom. For larger rooms or a more dramatic effect, a 300 x 400cm rug provides full coverage around the bed and beyond.
Bedside runners
If you'd rather not place a single large rug under the bed, two runners (one on each side) at 80 x 150cm or 80 x 300cm are a stylish alternative. This works particularly well in smaller bedrooms or where you want the floor itself on display.

The Best Rugs for Bedrooms in Our Collection
Some of our most-loved ranges have become staples for Australian bedrooms. Here's what to consider depending on the look and feel you're after:
Plush and Shaggy Rugs for Maximum Comfort
If softness is the priority, our Heaven 800 and Paradise 400 ranges are the obvious choice. The Heaven 800 has a 35mm pile that feels almost cloud-like underfoot. Available in ivory, beige, taupe, silver grey, and powder pink, these plush bedroom rugs are particularly popular for master suites where comfort matters most. Customers regularly tell us they wish they'd bought one years ago.
Machine Washable Rugs for Practical Bedrooms
For guest bedrooms, kids' bedrooms, or any room where spills and accidents are likely, our Peri 100 and Peri 110 machine washable rug ranges are a sensible choice. Throw them in a domestic washing machine and they come out looking fresh. Available in beige, grey, graphite, pink, black, and Moroccan-inspired patterns.
Designer Rugs for Master Bedrooms
If you're styling a master bedroom and want a refined finish, our Pierre Cardin designer rug collection is the go-to. The Paris and Vendome ranges in particular work beautifully in bedrooms, with subtle medallion patterns and faded transitional designs that suit both modern and classic interiors. Sizes go up to 300 x 400cm for larger master suites.
Traditional and Vintage-Look Rugs
For character homes, federation properties, or bedrooms styled in a more classic direction, our traditional and transitional rug range includes the popular Pacino, Medellin, and Aleyna collections. These vintage-look bedroom rugs add warmth and history without feeling dated.
Kids' Bedroom Rugs
Kids' bedrooms have different needs. Our Amigo, Happy, and Freestyle ranges include playful designs like unicorns, pandas, rocket ships, and pastel patterns. Most are low-pile or machine washable because kids' rooms see a lot of traffic. They work just as well in a nursery, a playroom, or a child's bedroom.
How to Place a Rug in Your Bedroom
There are three popular layouts when placing a rug in a bedroom. Each one suits a different room size and look:
Two-thirds under the bed
The most popular layout. The rug starts at the foot of the bed and extends under the lower two-thirds, leaving the bedside tables off the rug. This anchors the bed, gives you a soft landing on both sides, and works in most bedroom sizes.
Fully under the bed
The rug extends under the entire bed and the bedside tables, with around 60cm of rug visible on each side and at the foot. This is the hotel-suite look and works best in larger master bedrooms with king or queen beds.
Bedside runners
Two narrow runner rugs placed on either side of the bed. This option keeps your timber, tile, or polished concrete floors on display while still giving you that soft landing for your feet. Works particularly well in smaller bedrooms or rooms with statement flooring.
A few placement tips
Leave at least 30 to 60cm of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the bedroom walls. This frames the rug and stops the room feeling smaller. Centre the rug horizontally with the bed for symmetry. If you have an ottoman or bench at the foot of the bed, make sure the rug extends underneath it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bedroom Rugs
What size rug do I need for a queen bed?
A 200 x 290cm rug is the most popular size for a queen bedroom, placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed. For larger master suites, a 240 x 340cm rug gives a more luxurious, hotel-style look with the rug extending under the bedside tables.
What is the best material for a bedroom rug?
It depends on what you value most. Plush polyester or polypropylene rugs (like our Heaven 800 range) prioritise softness and warmth. Wool rugs are durable, naturally stain-resistant, and great for temperature regulation. Machine washable options are ideal for kids' rooms or guest bedrooms where spills are likely. Visit either of our showrooms to feel the differences in person.
Should the rug go under the bed or in front of it?
Most designers recommend placing the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, so it extends out around the sides and the foot. This anchors the bed visually and gives you a soft landing on both sides when you get out of bed. A rug placed only in front of the bed often looks disconnected.
Are shaggy rugs good for bedrooms?
Yes. Shaggy and plush rugs are one of the most popular choices for bedrooms because comfort underfoot matters more than in any other room. The Heaven 800 and Paradise 400 ranges in our shaggy rug collection are particularly popular for this reason.
Can I use a machine washable rug in my bedroom?
Absolutely. Machine washable rugs aren't just for kitchens. They're a smart choice for kids' bedrooms, guest rooms, or any bedroom where you'd rather have peace of mind about spills and stains. Our Peri range is available in bedroom-appropriate colours and patterns.
How do I stop my bedroom rug from slipping?
An anti-slip rug pad placed underneath the rug prevents movement on hardwood, tile, and laminate floors. It also extends the life of your rug and gives it a fuller feel underfoot. We stock anti-slip underlay in all standard rug sizes at both showrooms and online.
Do you deliver bedroom rugs across Australia?
Yes. We offer free Australia-wide delivery on all rug orders over $50. Sydney metro orders can opt for express delivery for 1 to 3 business day arrival. If you're in Sydney, browse our full Sydney rug collection for express delivery options and showroom pickup.
Can I see bedroom rugs in person before buying?
Yes. Both our Auburn and Lansvale showrooms display over 1,000 rugs at any time, including all our most popular bedroom rug ranges. Bring photos of your bedroom, your bed dimensions, or even a fabric swatch and our team will help you choose the right size and style.
