The kitchen is one of the most used areas in any home. Without a rug, it can feel cold and purely functional. Adding a rug or runner helps soften hard surfaces, protect your flooring, and create a more inviting space that works for everyday living.
Why Kitchen Rugs Are a Smart Choice for Australian Homes
A kitchen rug does more than look good. It plays a practical role in making your space more comfortable and easier to maintain.
-
Floor protection: Helps protect surfaces from spills, stains, and scratches in high-traffic areas
-
Comfort underfoot: Adds cushioning when standing for long periods while cooking or cleaning
-
Improved safety: Non-slip options help reduce movement on hard floors
-
Style and warmth: Adds texture and personality to an otherwise functional space
-
Noise reduction: Absorbs sound, making kitchens feel quieter and more relaxed
For many Australian households, kitchen rugs are both a functional and design choice, helping balance practicality with a more finished look.
Where to Use Kitchen Rugs
Kitchen rugs can be used in different areas depending on your layout.
In front of the sink: One of the most popular placements, adding comfort where you stand the most.
Between counters: A kitchen runner rug works well in narrow walkways, adding softness without getting in the way.
Under kitchen islands: Helps define the space and adds a more styled feel.
Dining areas: A rug under the table can tie the space together, especially in open-plan kitchens.
Choosing the right placement helps your rug feel intentional rather than just decorative.
Choosing the Right Kitchen Rug
When selecting a kitchen rug, it’s important to balance style with practicality.
-
Size: For narrow spaces, a kitchen runner rug is ideal. For larger areas, choose a rug that fits comfortably within the layout without crowding the space.
-
Material: Durable synthetic fibres or cotton blends are best for kitchens as they are easy to clean and maintain.
-
Design: Neutral tones create a clean look, while patterns help hide stains and add character.
-
Non-slip backing: Essential for safety, especially on tiles or timber floors.
If your kitchen sees a lot of activity, choosing a practical, easy-care rug will make a noticeable difference over time.

Most of our kitchen rugs come in the same few sizes, so it is worth measuring before you choose a design.
-
Kitchen runners: Peri washable rugs come as 80x140cm and 80x280cm runners, and Sunset as 80x150cm and 80x230cm. The 80x280cm length suits a galley kitchen.

Small mats: Finca comes in 60x110cm, sized for the spot in front of a sink or back door.
-
Large kitchen rugs: Peri goes up to 200x280cm and Sunset, Soho and Medellin up to 200x290cm, big enough to sit under a dining table in an open plan kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Rugs
Can you put a rug in the kitchen?
Yes, kitchen rugs are a popular choice for adding comfort, protecting floors, and improving the look of the space.
What are the best kitchen rugs?
The best kitchen rugs are durable, easy to clean, and designed for high-traffic areas. Materials like polyester and washable rugs are ideal.
Where can I buy kitchen rugs in Australia?
You can shop our full range of kitchen rugs online with Australia-wide delivery or visit our Sydney showrooms in Auburn and Lansvale.
Are kitchen rugs easy to clean?
Yes, most kitchen rugs are designed to be low maintenance. Many can be spot cleaned, while some are fully machine washable.
Should I put carpet in a kitchen?
Wall-to-wall carpet is a poor fit for a kitchen because spills soak through to the underlay and cannot be lifted out. A rug or runner you can pick up, shake out or put through the wash does the same job and comes out when it needs cleaning.
What size rug should I use in the kitchen?
For narrow spaces, a runner between 150cm and 300cm works well. For larger areas, a rectangular rug around 160x230cm is a popular choice.
