Extra Large Rugs 240x340cm
Where it fits: About half the sofa sits on the rug. The best fit always depends on your sofa and room size.
Extra large rugs are the ideal choice for bigger rooms and open-plan living spaces where standard sizes simply aren’t enough. At Adore Rugs, our collection of extra large rugs in Australia focuses on the highly popular 240x340cm size, designed to provide full coverage and create a more cohesive, balanced look in your home.
If a 200x290cm rug feels slightly too small for your space, stepping up to a 240x340cm rug can make a noticeable difference. This size allows more furniture to sit comfortably on the rug, helping rooms feel more connected and visually complete.
Why 240x340cm Rugs Are the Perfect Extra Large Size
The 240x340cm size is widely considered the next step up from standard large rugs. It offers greater coverage while still being manageable in most homes.
- More coverage: Allows full furniture layouts to sit comfortably on the rug
- Perfect for open-plan spaces: Helps define larger living and dining zones
- Balanced look: Prevents rooms from feeling disconnected or undersized
- Premium feel: Creates a more luxurious and complete finish
- Ideal upgrade: A natural step up from large rugs
If you're working with a smaller space, you may want to explore our large rugs collection (200x290cm). For even bigger areas, browse our oversized rugs (300x400cm).
Where Extra Large Rugs Work Best
Extra large rugs are best suited to larger rooms where smaller rugs would feel out of proportion.
Living rooms: A large living room rug in 240x340cm allows all furniture, including sofas and armchairs, to sit comfortably on the rug. This creates a more cohesive and high-end look.
Open-plan spaces: Perfect for zoning large living and dining areas without breaking the flow of the space.
Dining rooms: A dining room rug in this size works well for 6 to 8 seater tables, allowing chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out.
Bedrooms: A bedroom rug in 240x340cm can sit fully under a queen or king bed, extending out on all sides for a soft, luxurious feel.
Extra Large Rug Size Guide
Understanding how extra large rugs compare to other sizes helps you choose the right fit.
- 160x230cm: Smaller option for compact spaces (see small rugs)
- 200x290cm: Standard large rug size (browse large rugs)
- 240x340cm: Ideal extra large rug size for bigger rooms
- 300x400cm: Best for oversized spaces (view oversized rugs)
Choosing the right size ensures your rug complements your space rather than making it feel too small or too crowded.
Popular Extra Large Rug Styles
Extra large rugs come in a wide range of styles, allowing you to find the perfect fit for your home.
Modern rugs: Clean, minimal designs that suit contemporary interiors and open-plan layouts.
Traditional rugs: Detailed patterns that add structure and elegance to larger rooms.
Neutral rugs: Beige, cream, and grey tones that create a calm, balanced base.
Shaggy rugs: Plush options that add warmth and comfort to bedrooms and lounge areas.
Washable rugs: Practical choices for busy homes and high-traffic areas.
How to Style an Extra Large Rug
Extra large rugs should be used to connect your entire furniture layout rather than just a portion of it.
In living rooms, aim to have all major furniture pieces sitting fully on the rug. This creates a more cohesive and high-end look. In dining rooms, ensure the rug extends beyond the table to allow chairs to move freely. In bedrooms, position the rug so it extends out evenly around the bed.
Because of their size, extra large rugs can handle more pattern and texture without overwhelming the space, making them ideal statement pieces.
