What a hybrid install involves

Hybrid is a floating floor. The planks click together and sit on an underlay rather than being glued or nailed down, with a small expansion gap at every wall that the scotia or skirting covers. That makes it quick to lay. It also means the floor is only as flat as whatever is underneath it, which is where most of the real work goes.

  1. Measure and subfloor check. We measure every room and the stairs, then check the subfloor for level and movement. On a slab we also check for moisture. On particleboard upstairs we look at every sheet join.
  2. The old floor comes out. Carpet, underlay and gripper strips are lifted and taken away. Sometimes the old underlay has fused to the floor and has to be scraped back by hand. It is slow, and it goes in the quote.
  3. Preparation. Low spots are levelled, raised sheet joins are sanded, and rooms that sit lower than a tiled corridor are packed up so the new floor finishes flush with no lip at the doorway.
  4. Laying. The planks go down over the underlay, cut around door frames, kitchen cabinets and anything fixed to the floor.
  5. Trims, skirting and stairs. Scotia or new skirting covers the gap at the walls, matching trims finish the edge at the cabinets, and the stairs are clad step by step with a nosing on the front of each tread.

Hybrid on stairs

Carpeted stairs are often the last thing left once the rest of the house has gone to hard floors. We clad each tread and riser in the same hybrid as the rooms they join and fit a nosing to the front edge, so the floor runs from the entry to the bedrooms without a change. Stairs are measured at the same visit and priced step by step. Each one is cut and fitted on its own, which is why a flight takes longer than the rooms around it.

What goes into the price

Hybrid quotes vary more than people expect, and the board is only part of it. The written quote itemises each of these:

  • The area and the board you choose. Thickness, plank size and range all move the supply cost.
  • What is down now. Carpet that lifts cleanly is quick. Underlay that has bonded to the slab is not.
  • Subfloor preparation. Levelling, sanding sheet joins, or packing a room up to meet the tiles.
  • Stairs, priced per step with nosings.
  • Finishing. Scotia or new skirting, door trims and the edges at kitchen cabinets.
  • Furniture. We can work around it room by room. Tell us at the measure so it goes in the quote.

That is why we price after the measure rather than over the phone, and why the number you get on the day is the number you pay.

“Nas was a legend from day one, super helpful, genuinely knew his stuff, and explained the pros/cons of hybrid vs other options in a way that made the decision easy. … Our stairs were a bit of a headache … but they came up with a clever, out-of-the-box solution that made all the difference. What happens after you hit send

  1. We call you. Within 2 hours during business hours (10am to 6pm, 7 days), to understand the job and find a time. Nobody turns up unannounced.
  2. We measure on site and bring samples so you can see the colours in your own rooms, in your own light.
  3. You get your price before we leave. Supply and install, itemised, in writing. If it works for you, we can book your install date on the spot.

Takes about thirty seconds, and you don’t need to measure anything first. Rough is fine. That is what we come out for.

A rough guess is fine. We confirm the exact area at the measure.

Nothing is locked in. We bring samples from every range to the measure so you can compare them side by side.

What is down now decides how much preparation the job needs, so it helps to know before we come out.

We’ll only use your details to contact you about this quote. The measure costs nothing and there is no obligation to proceed.

Why booking early matters. Four flooring installs a week is a real limit, not a sales line. When the week is full, it is full. The measure is the thing that holds your place in the calendar, and it costs you nothing.

Planning to have it done before Christmas? Most trades stop from around the middle of December, so the measure needs to happen by the first week of December for a pre-Christmas install. After that we are booking into January.

Questions about hybrid

Hybrid or laminate?

Both are floating floors and both are laid the same way. Hybrid has a rigid core that copes better with spills, which is why it is the usual choice when the floor runs through a kitchen or laundry. If you are weighing the two, our laminate installation page covers the other side, and we bring samples of both to the measure.

Can hybrid go over my existing tiles?

Often, if the tiles are flat and firmly stuck down. Loose or cracked tiles, or a big change in height at a doorway, change the answer. We check this at the measure rather than guessing over the phone.

How long does the install take?

A single room is usually a day. A standard three bedroom house in hybrid is two to three days. Subfloor preparation and stairs add time.

Do you take the old carpet away?

Yes. Carpet, underlay and gripper strips are lifted and taken away, and the cost is listed separately in the quote.

Who actually lays the floor?

One main flooring installer does our hard-flooring work. He is a subcontractor, as is standard in this trade, but the job is ours. We take full responsibility for it, and if anything needs fixing you call us.
