Two of our recent stair jobs were in Kellyville and The Ponds. Both are below, photographed on the day.

Two recent Hills jobs

Kellyville: the winding staircase other installers turned down

The customer had asked around and could not find anyone willing to take it on. The flight winds as it climbs, and a steel baluster passes through every tread. We lifted the old carpet and scribed each board of Leyton 8mm hybrid in Silver Mist around the steel. Upstairs, the subfloor was already level. So the whole upstairs went down in the same floor, finished with scotia.

The Ponds: carpet out, two rooms raised to meet the tiles

Under the carpet, the old underlay had fused to the sheet floor and came away in strips. It was scraped back by hand. Two downstairs rooms sat lower than the tiled corridor, so we packed them up until the new floor finished flush, with no lip at either doorway. The floor is EasiPlank Natural Blackbutt hybrid, and the stairs are clad in the same board. This is the job behind Ruwan G.'s review.

What Hills homes usually need

Much of the housing in Kellyville, Rouse Hill, The Ponds and Box Hill is two storey and less than thirty years old. Both jobs above started the same way, with carpet upstairs and on the stairs. The two levels sit on different subfloors. Upstairs is usually particleboard sheeting on joists, and downstairs is usually a concrete slab. Each needs its own checks, so at the free measure we test both for level and look at the sheet joins. Any sanding, packing or levelling is written into the quote before you agree to anything.

Stairs are measured at the same visit and priced step by step. Each step is cut and fitted on its own, with a nosing on the front edge, which is why stairs take longer than the rooms around them.

Pattern floors for open plan living

Herringbone works well down a long entry hall or across a big open plan living area, both common in newer Hills homes. We supply herringbone in engineered timber with a real timber wear layer, and in hybrid when the floor has to run into a kitchen. The pattern is set out at the measure so it finishes balanced at the walls.

Questions we get from Hills homeowners

Can you replace carpeted stairs with timber look flooring?

Yes. Both jobs on this page did exactly that. The stairs are clad in the same board as the floor, with a nosing on every step.

Do you come out to the Hills for the free measure?

Yes. The free measure and written quote cover metro Sydney, and that includes every suburb named on this page.

Hybrid or laminate upstairs?

Both suit bedrooms and hallways. Hybrid has a rigid core that copes better with spills, so it is the usual choice when the same floor continues into a kitchen or laundry downstairs.
