A 120 x 170cm rug works as an accent piece beside the bed, or a 160 x 230cm rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed gives a fuller look. Single bedroom rugs are also great for kids' rooms or guest bedrooms.
Double bed (138cm x 188cm)
A 160 x 230cm rug positioned under the lower two-thirds of the bed is the most popular choice. For a more generous look, step up to a 200 x 290cm rug that extends further around the sides.
Queen bed (153cm x 203cm)
A 200 x 290cm rug is the sweet spot for most queen-bed bedrooms. For larger master suites, a 240 x 340cm rug allows the rug to extend past the bedside tables for a luxurious, hotel-style look.
King bed (183cm x 203cm)
A 240 x 340cm rug is the recommended minimum for a king bedroom. For larger rooms or a more dramatic effect, a 300 x 400cm rug provides full coverage around the bed and beyond.
Bedside runners
If you'd rather not place a single large rug under the bed, two runners (one on each side) at 80 x 150cm or 80 x 300cm are a stylish alternative. This works particularly well in smaller bedrooms or where you want the floor itself on display.

How to Place a Rug in Your Bedroom
There are three popular layouts when placing a rug in a bedroom. Each one suits a different room size and look:
Two-thirds under the bed
The most popular layout. The rug starts at the foot of the bed and extends under the lower two-thirds, leaving the bedside tables off the rug. This anchors the bed, gives you a soft landing on both sides, and works in most bedroom sizes.
Fully under the bed
The rug extends under the entire bed and the bedside tables, with around 60cm of rug visible on each side and at the foot. This is the hotel-suite look and works best in larger master bedrooms with king or queen beds.
Bedside runners
Two narrow runner rugs placed on either side of the bed. This option keeps your timber, tile, or polished concrete floors on display while still giving you that soft landing for your feet. Works particularly well in smaller bedrooms or rooms with statement flooring.
A few placement tips
Leave at least 30 to 60cm of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the bedroom walls. This frames the rug and stops the room feeling smaller. Centre the rug horizontally with the bed for symmetry. If you have an ottoman or bench at the foot of the bed, make sure the rug extends underneath it.
