Where a 160x230cm Rug Works Best
Living rooms
In a standard living room, a 160x230cm rug sits neatly under a coffee table with the front legs of your sofa on the rug. That front-legs-on placement is the most common arrangement in Australian homes because it connects the furniture without needing a rug large enough to fit everything. For larger open-plan spaces, step up to 200x290cm.
Bedrooms
Under a queen bed, a 160x230cm rug covers the lower two-thirds and gives you something soft underfoot on both sides when you get up. For a king bed, most people prefer 200x290cm or larger so the rug extends further past the sides.
Dining rooms
A 160x230cm rug suits a four-seater dining table, keeping chair legs on the rug when they are pulled out. For a six-seater, size up — a rug that is too small means chairs catch on the edge every time someone sits down.
Home offices and studies
This size works well under a desk and chair, defining the workspace and softening the acoustics of a room that is often hard-surfaced.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 160x230cm a small or medium rug?
Medium. Most Australian retailers classify small as 80x150cm to 120x170cm, medium as 160x230cm, large as 200x290cm, and extra large as 240x340cm and above. If you are after something smaller, see our small rugs in 120x170cm.
Will a 160x230cm rug fit my living room?
In most standard living rooms, yes. Measure your seating area first — as a rule of thumb you want 20 to 40cm of visible floor around the rug. If your room is open-plan or your sofa is larger than a three-seater, consider sizing up.
What colour should I choose?
Grey and beige remain the most popular because they work with almost any furniture. Mid and dark tones hide everyday marks better than cream or white. If your room already has bold furniture or artwork, a plainer rug gives the eye somewhere to rest.
Do I need an underlay?
On hard floors, yes. An anti-slip underlay stops the rug sliding, reduces wear on the backing, and makes it feel more substantial underfoot.
