How to choose an abstract rug
The trick with abstract rugs is matching the energy of the design to the room. A few rules of thumb we share with customers in store:
- For a busy room with lots of patterns and colours already in play, go softer muted abstracts in tonal colours add interest without competing

Sizing
The right size matters as much as the right design. In a living room, aim for a rug large enough that the front legs of your sofa sit on it, anything smaller looks marooned in the middle of the floor. We stock abstract rugs from 120x170cm through to oversized 300x400cm for big open-plan spaces, plus round options if you're working with a curved layout.

FAQs
What actually counts as an "abstract" rug?
Anything that uses non-representational design patterns, shapes, colours, brushstroke effects rather than literal motifs like flowers, animals, or traditional medallions. Some abstracts lean geometric (think clean shapes and lines), others lean painterly (washes of colour, brushstroke textures). Both fit under the abstract umbrella.
Will an abstract rug clash with patterned furniture?
It depends on the scale. A general rule: pair small patterns with large-scale abstracts, and large patterns with small-scale abstracts. The two patterns shouldn't compete at the same scale. If your sofa already has a busy print, look at our muted, tonal abstracts rather than the bolder graphic designs.
Are abstract rugs hard to clean?
No more than any other rug and often easier, because the busy pattern hides minor marks better than a plain rug would. Vacuum regularly with a brushless attachment, blot spills immediately rather than rubbing them, and avoid harsh chemicals. For a deeper clean, professional rug cleaning every 12–18 months is a good idea for higher-traffic rugs.
What materials are your abstract rugs made from?
Most are polypropylene or polyester, which are durable, colourfast, and easy to maintain, important for a rug where the colour and pattern are the whole point. Our Pierre Cardin designer pieces use higher-grade polypropylene with denser construction. Each product page lists the specific material under "Product Information".
Can abstract rugs work in traditional homes?
Yes, but choose carefully. Look for abstracts with classic colour palettes (deep blues, terracottas, muted golds) rather than ultra-modern brights. Our transitional rugs are also worth a look, they blend abstract sensibility with more traditional structure, which often works better in classic homes than a pure abstract would.
