Thick Rugs
When people say they want a "thick rug", they're almost always describing a feeling rather than a measurement. They want to step onto something and feel it. They want substance, cushion, and the unmistakable sense that the rug has real weight and quality to it. That's what this collection is about: rugs with genuine density and presence underfoot, whether that comes from a deep shaggy pile, a tightly packed medium pile, or a heavy construction that you can feel the moment you pick it up.
What makes a rug "thick"
Thickness in a rug comes from two things, and understanding the difference helps you choose the right one.
Pile height is how tall the fibres stand. A higher pile (25mm and above) feels deep and plush because there's more material between your foot and the floor. This is the obvious kind of thick, and it's what most people picture when they think of a thick rug. Our shaggy rugs and fluffy rugs fall into this category.
Pile density is how tightly the fibres are packed together. A dense rug can have a medium pile height but still feel thick and substantial because the fibres are so closely woven that nothing gives way when you step on it. Dense rugs tend to feel firmer and more solid than high pile rugs. They also hold their shape better over time, show less wear, and tend to be heavier per square metre.
The best thick rugs combine both: generous pile height with tight density. That's what separates a quality thick rug from a cheap one that looks plush in photos but compresses flat within a few months.
Why density matters as much as height
This is the thing most people don't realise until they've bought a few rugs. Two rugs can have the same pile height on paper but feel completely different underfoot. The difference is density.
A low-density high pile rug feels soft initially but compresses quickly under foot traffic. The pile separates and flattens, and within six months it looks tired. A high-density rug at the same pile height holds its shape, bounces back after being walked on, and still looks fresh years later. Density is why our Pierre Cardin rugs feel so different from budget alternatives at the same pile height. The fibres are packed tighter, the rug weighs more per square metre, and the result is a rug that holds up.
When shopping for a thick rug, check the weight per square metre listed on the product page. It's the single best indicator of real density and quality. Heavier is almost always better.
How thick rugs differ from shaggy and fluffy
We get asked this a lot, so here's the clear breakdown:
Shaggy rugs are defined by their long, loose pile strands. They look textured and tousled. The thickness comes from pile height rather than density. They're the most relaxed, casual option and they feel soft and yielding underfoot.
Fluffy rugs use dense faux fur fibres (like our Heaven 800 range) that mimic rabbit fur. They're thick because the pile is both tall and dense, creating a smooth, silky, luxurious surface. They're the most uniformly soft option.
Thick rugs is the broader category that includes both of the above, plus dense medium-pile and heavy construction rugs that feel substantial without necessarily having long or fluffy pile. A thick rug might be shaggy, fluffy, or neither. The unifying quality is that it feels solid and cushioned underfoot.
If you already know you want long, tousled pile, go to shaggy. If you want silky smooth faux fur, go to fluffy. If you want substantial, cushioned, and high quality but you're open on the exact style, stay here and browse the full thick rug range.
Our thick rug ranges
A few standouts that represent different approaches to thickness:
The Marble 700 combines a thick, soft pile with a marbled surface pattern. Premium materials with real weight and density. Available in silver and yellow. These are some of the most luxurious-feeling rugs in our range.
The Pierre Cardin collection approaches thickness differently. The pile is medium height rather than shaggy, but the density is exceptional. Acrylic, tencel, and lyocell fibres are packed tightly, creating a rug that feels substantial, refined, and heavy in the hand. If you want a thick rug that looks formal and elegant rather than casual and cosy, the Pierre Cardin ranges are the ones to look at.
Where thick rugs work best
Bedrooms are the most natural spot. The bedroom is where you're most often barefoot, most in need of warmth underfoot, and least concerned about practicality. A thick rug beside or under the bed transforms how the room feels first thing in the morning.
Living rooms suit thick rugs when comfort is a priority. A dense, plush rug under the coffee table makes the lounge area feel inviting and grounded. Just be realistic: very high pile thick rugs can be harder to vacuum and will show furniture indentations more than flat rugs.
Nurseries and kids' rooms benefit from thick rugs because children spend so much time on the floor. A dense, cushioned rug softens the surface for crawling, sitting, and playing. Our Heaven 800 in ivory or powder pink is a popular choice for this. For messy rooms, consider whether a machine washable rug might be more practical, even if it's thinner.
Reading nooks and quiet corners are where a thick rug creates a genuine destination. A round thick rug in a corner with a chair and a lamp turns an unused spot into the best seat in the house.
Where thick rugs don't work as well: dining rooms (chairs don't slide easily on thick pile), home offices (office chairs struggle on deep pile), hallways and entryways (high traffic compresses thick pile faster), and kitchens (spills sink deep into thick pile and are hard to clean).
Care and maintenance
Thick rugs need slightly more attention than flatweaves, but it's not complicated:
- Vacuum regularly with the beater bar turned off. Beater bars can pull and damage long pile strands. A suction-only attachment is safest for high pile thick rugs
- Expect light shedding for the first 2 to 4 weeks with any new thick rug. Normal and temporary
- Rotate 180 degrees every 6 months to even out wear and sun exposure
- Lift heavy furniture periodically to fluff the compressed pile underneath. Gently work the fibres upright with your fingers or a soft brush
- Blot spills immediately. Deep pile traps liquid more than flat rugs, so speed matters. Don't rub, just blot with a clean cloth
- Use an anti-slip underlay underneath every thick rug. Heavier rugs shift less than light ones, but an underlay still protects your floors and adds an extra layer of cushion
Sizing
Thick rugs are substantial pieces, so getting the size right matters both visually and practically. In a bedroom, aim for the rug to extend at least 60cm past the sides of the bed. For a living room, the front legs of your sofa should sit on the rug at minimum.
We stock thick rugs from 80x150cm runners through to 200x290cm, plus round options in three sizes for beside beds, under side tables, and as feature pieces.
One practical note: larger thick rugs are genuinely heavy. If you're ordering a 200x290cm Paradise or Cloud, be prepared for it. You may want a second person to help unroll and position it.
Why shop with Adore Rugs

Thick rugs are the single category we recommend seeing in person above all others. The difference between a genuinely dense, heavy rug and a budget imitation is something you can only feel by stepping on it. If you're in Sydney, come in barefoot and try a few. If you're interstate, call us on 02 9166 3980 and we'll walk you through the options. We'll be honest about which ones are worth the investment and which ones suit your room best.
FAQs
How can I tell if a thick rug is good quality before buying?
Check the weight per square metre on the product page. Heavier rugs are almost always denser and better made. As a rough guide: anything above 2kg/sqm is good, above 3kg/sqm is excellent. Also look at the materials. Acrylic and tencel hold their shape better than budget polyester over time. If you can visit the showroom, pick the rug up. A quality thick rug feels noticeably heavy for its size.
Will a thick rug compress and flatten over time?
All rugs compress under traffic and furniture to some degree, but dense, heavy rugs resist it far better than low-density ones. That's the main advantage of investing in a genuinely thick, well-made rug rather than a cheap high pile that looks plush in photos. Our Paradise, Heaven, and Pierre Cardin ranges are all built to maintain their pile over years of use. Regular rotation and occasional fluffing of compressed areas help too.
Are thick pile rugs okay with underfloor heating?
Yes, but thick rugs insulate the floor more than thin ones, which means the heating needs to work slightly harder to warm the room. This isn't a compatibility problem, just a minor efficiency trade-off. If maximum heat transfer is important, a thinner rug is more efficient. If comfort underfoot is the priority, a thick rug still works well over underfloor heating and will feel wonderfully warm.
Can I use a thick rug under a dining table?
Not recommended. Dining chairs need to slide in and out easily, and thick pile makes that awkward and frustrating. Chairs will also create deep compression marks in high pile rugs that are hard to reverse. For dining rooms, a flatweave or low pile rug from our plain rugs or modern rugs collection is a much better choice.
What's the thickest rug you sell?
The Heaven 800 at 35mm pile and 2.1kg/sqm and the Paradise 400 range are our thickest and most substantial rugs. The Cloud 500 has the longest individual pile strands but is slightly less dense. For the absolute maximum in cushioned, sink-your-feet-in thickness, the Paradise 400 in larger sizes is hard to beat. Come feel them in the showroom if you want to compare.
Are heavy rugs hard to move and clean?
They're heavier to lift and reposition than thin rugs, yes. A large thick rug (200x290cm) in our Sensation or Softouch range may need two people to move. For vacuuming, use a suction-only attachment and avoid dragging the vacuum aggressively across deep pile. Smaller thick rugs (120x170cm and below) can be taken outside and shaken to remove trapped dust and crumbs. For regular maintenance, the extra effort is minimal. For a full deep clean, professional rug cleaning every 12 to 18 months is the safest option for high-value thick rugs.
