Whether you need a low pile rug for smooth chair movement, a stylish rug under your desk, or a practical washable rug for a busy household, this collection is designed to make your office feel polished without making it harder to work in.
Why Add a Rug to Your Office?
A rug in an office is not just decoration. It changes how the room feels, sounds, and functions day to day.
-
Protects your floors: Office chairs can scratch hard floors and wear down carpet. A durable rug helps reduce daily damage.
-
Softens the space: Rugs add warmth underfoot, especially if your office has timber, tile, vinyl, or laminate flooring.
-
Reduces noise: A rug helps absorb sound, making video calls, typing, and chair movement feel less echoey.
-
Adds style: The right rug can make a plain desk setup feel intentional, calm, and finished.
What Type of Rug Works Best Under an Office Chair?
The best rug for an office chair is usually a low pile rug or flat-weave style. These are easier for chairs to roll over and less likely to bunch, catch, or feel uneven under the wheels.
Thick shaggy rugs can look beautiful in bedrooms and lounge rooms, but they are not always the best choice directly under a rolling chair. If you want soft texture in the office, place a plush rug away from the desk area, or browse our low pile rugs and flat weave rugs for a more practical option under your chair.
Choosing the Right Office Rug Size
Size matters in an office because your chair needs room to move. A rug that is too small can be annoying, especially if your wheels keep rolling off the edge.
-
Small desk setup: A 160x230cm rug usually works well for a compact home office.
-
Larger office: A 200x290cm rug gives more room for the desk, chair, and extra furniture.
-
Full room look: If you want the rug to anchor the whole office, choose a size large enough for the main furniture to sit comfortably on it.
As a general rule, your rug should sit under the desk and chair, with enough extra space behind the chair so you can roll back without coming off the rug.
Best Office Rug Styles
The right style depends on the type of workspace you want to create. Neutral rugs are great for calm, professional offices. Patterned rugs are useful if you want to hide marks and add personality. Modern rugs work beautifully in clean, minimal workspaces, while traditional designs can make an office feel warmer and more established.

Office Rugs for Home Workspaces
Home offices need to do more than look good on a video call. They need to feel comfortable enough for long workdays, practical enough for daily chair movement, and easy to maintain around kids, pets, coffee, and general household traffic.
If your office is part of a bedroom, living room, or open-plan area, a rug also helps define the workspace without needing walls or dividers. This is especially useful in apartments and smaller homes, where the desk area can otherwise feel like it is floating in the room.
How to Keep an Office Rug Clean
Office rugs are usually easy to maintain with regular care. Vacuum weekly to remove dust, crumbs, and chair-wheel marks. Blot spills quickly instead of rubbing them, and rotate the rug every few months if one area gets more chair movement than the rest.
For very busy workspaces, look at our washable rugs or durable synthetic rugs. These are practical choices if your office also doubles as a study area, craft space, or multipurpose room.

Office Rugs FAQs
Will a rug protect carpet from an office chair?
Yes. A durable office rug can help protect carpet from everyday chair movement, pressure marks, and wear. For best results, choose a low pile rug that sits flat and gives your chair enough room to move.
Can I use a rug instead of an office chair mat?
Yes, many people use a rug instead of a plastic office chair mat because it looks better and softens the room. Just make sure the rug is large enough and not too thick, so your chair can move comfortably.
How big should a rug be in an office?
For most home offices, 160x230cm is a good starting point. Larger rooms may suit 200x290cm or bigger. The rug should fit under your desk and chair, with enough space behind the chair so it does not roll off the edge.
What type of rug is best for a rolling office chair?
Low pile rugs and flat-weave rugs are usually best for rolling office chairs. They allow smoother movement and are less likely to catch under the wheels compared to thick, high pile rugs.
Are office rugs easy to clean?
Yes. Most office rugs only need regular vacuuming and quick spot cleaning. For easier maintenance, choose a washable rug or a durable synthetic rug, especially if the office is used every day.
Can office rugs reduce noise?
Yes. Rugs help absorb sound from footsteps, chair movement, typing, and general room echo. This can make a home office feel quieter and more comfortable, especially during calls or focused work.
