280x380cm Rugs
A 280x380cm rug covers about 10.6 square metres, which is enough for most of a lounge suite to sit on it with floor showing around the edge. It is the step between the 240x340cm, where roughly half the sofa sits on the rug, and the 300x400cm, where the whole sofa does. We keep over 100 designs in this size, from flat traditional medallions to 20mm shag, and every one of them is also made in smaller sizes if the room turns out to need less.
When 280x380cm is the right size
Measure the seating area rather than the room. Stand the front legs of the sofa and armchairs on the rug and you want at least 20cm of rug showing past the outside of each piece. For a three seat sofa with two armchairs facing it across a coffee table, that usually lands at 280x380cm. If the sofa is a large modular or the room is open plan with the dining table nearby, go up to 300x400cm. If only the front legs will sit on the rug, 240x340cm is often enough.
Under a dining table, 280x380cm suits an eight seater. Allow about 60cm of rug beyond the table edge on every side so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.
What is in this size
The largest groups are polypropylene rugs made in Turkey. Statement is a traditional range with a 10mm pile in black, grey, cream and terracotta. Desire runs vintage medallion designs on a 9mm pile. Sena and Rue are abstract and watercolour florals at 10mm, and Jade is a set of geometric and checkerboard designs at 8mm with a cotton backing. Amira is a Moroccan trellis design in 100% polypropylene heatset at 9mm, with a cut and flat pile that raises the pattern.
For softness there is the Tender shag range, power loomed in Turkey with a 20mm pile in cream, beige, silver and blush. The Pierre Cardin Paris 502 and 504 designs are a 50% polyester, 50% heatset polypropylene blend on a jute backing, with a shrink polyester finish that gives the pattern a raised, 3D look.
Living with a big rug
Polypropylene is the practical fibre at this scale. It does not absorb spills, it vacuums clean, and it holds its colour in a sunny room. Most of these rugs are 8mm to 10mm pile, which is low enough for doors to clear and for a robot vacuum to cope with. A rug this size is heavy to move, so decide the position before it is unrolled and put an anti-slip underlay down first if it is going onto tiles or timber.

Every rug here ships free anywhere in Australia, with 21-day returns. Large rugs arrive rolled and can take a day to settle flat.
