Green Rugs
Green rugs are having a real moment in Australian interior design. Once considered a bold or risky choice, green has become one of the most-requested rug colours of the last few years, particularly in shades like sage, olive, and forest green. The reason is simple. Green brings the outdoors in, pairs effortlessly with timber and natural materials, and adds personality to a room without committing to a maximalist scheme. Whether you're after a soft sage rug for a calming bedroom, a deep forest green rug for a moody library, or a vibrant emerald rug to anchor a statement living room, our collection covers every shade.
Every green rug is hand-picked by our team and stocked across our two Sydney showrooms in Auburn and Lansvale. Visit either store to see colours under proper lighting, or shop online with free Australia-wide delivery on rugs and 21-day returns.
Why Green Rugs Are Trending
Interior design moves in cycles. Grey dominated the 2010s. Warm earth tones took over in the early 2020s. Now green is the colour designers reach for when a room needs a quiet point of difference. Here's why it works:
It's nature-inspired but still neutral
Green is the most common colour in nature, which is why it feels familiar and calming rather than loud. Unlike pink, yellow, or red, a green rug doesn't dominate a room. Sage, olive, and muted forest tones in particular function almost like neutrals, going with everything from cream couches to navy walls.
Pairs beautifully with timber, brass and natural materials
Green rugs and timber furniture are made for each other. Add brass lighting, leather chairs, linen curtains, indoor plants, and woven baskets and the room comes alive. This is the foundation of the modern earthy and biophilic design styles dominating Australian homes right now.
Adds personality without commitment
Many homeowners want their home to feel personal but worry about choosing colours that will date. Green rugs strike the balance perfectly. They add personality and character without the loudness of pink or yellow, and historically green has held its appeal across decades rather than disappearing in five years.
Works in both modern and traditional homes
Sage and olive suit modern, Scandi, and earthy interiors. Forest and emerald suit traditional, Hamptons, library, and Victorian-inspired spaces. Lime and bright green suit kids' rooms and playful contemporary homes. There's a green for every style.
Hides minor wear better than light colours
Mid-tone and darker greens hide pet hair, dirt, and minor stains far better than light or white rugs. That makes them practical for living rooms, family rooms, and homes with kids or pets.
Shades of Green to Consider
"Green" covers a huge range. The shade you choose changes the entire feel of the room.
Sage green
Soft, muted, and slightly grey-toned. Sage is the most popular green rug colour in Australian homes right now. It's calming, timeless, and works in modern, Scandi, coastal, and Japandi interiors. Pairs beautifully with cream, white, and oatmeal furniture and connects naturally with our cream rug range.
Olive green
Earthy, warm, and slightly yellow-toned. Olive rugs feel grounded and lived-in, particularly in homes with timber floors and warm metallic finishes. Suit boho, mediterranean, country, and earthy modern interiors.
Forest green
Deep, rich, and slightly cool-toned. Forest green rugs make a strong design statement and work beautifully in studies, libraries, formal living rooms, and traditional or Hamptons-style homes. Pair with cream walls, leather furniture, and brass accents for a classic look.
Emerald green
Vivid, jewel-toned, and dramatic. Emerald rugs feel luxurious and confident, suiting eclectic, art deco, and maximalist interiors. Best in larger rooms with plenty of natural light. Pair with velvet furniture, gold accents, and dark walls for a glamorous feel.
Mint and lime green
Light, fresh, and energising. Mint and lime rugs work in kids' rooms, nurseries, sunrooms, and playful contemporary spaces. They lift a room visually and feel cheerful rather than serious.
Olive-grey and sage-grey hybrids
Greens with strong grey undertones. These work for homeowners who want a hint of green without committing fully to the colour. Pair beautifully with our grey rug collection for adjoining rooms.
Green Rugs for Every Room
Green rugs for the living room
The living room is where green rugs make the biggest visual impact. A 200x290cm or 240x340cm sage or forest green rug under your sofa creates a calm, considered foundation that ties the rest of the room together. For larger open-plan living rooms, step up to 300x400cm. Plush green shaggy rugs work for cosy family rooms, while flat-weave or low-pile green rugs suit more formal or contemporary living spaces. Browse our full living room rug collection for size and styling guidance.
Green rugs for the bedroom
Sage and muted green rugs are particularly suited to bedrooms because of their calming, restful quality. Place a 200x290cm rug under the lower two-thirds of a queen bed, or a 240x340cm under a king. Soft, plush green rugs are popular for master suites where comfort underfoot matters first thing in the morning. See our bedroom rugs collection for placement tips and bed-size guidance.
Green rugs for the dining room
A deep forest or olive green rug under a timber dining table creates a sophisticated, restaurant-quality space. Choose low-pile or flat-weave styles so chairs slide easily, and size generously enough that all chair legs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 200x290cm suits a 4 to 6 seater table; 300x400cm suits 8 to 10 seaters.
Green rugs for the kitchen
For kitchens, choose a green machine washable rug or runner that handles spills and traffic. Our Peri 100 and Peri 110 ranges include green and olive options that go straight in the washing machine when they need refreshing.
Green rugs for kids' rooms and nurseries
Soft mint, sage, and gentle green tones suit kids' rooms beautifully because they're calming without being too sweet. Our kids' rugs collection includes several green and nature-inspired options that suit nurseries, toddler rooms, and bigger kids' bedrooms.
Green rugs for outdoor spaces
Green outdoor rugs blend naturally into garden settings, balconies, and alfresco areas. Our flat-weave outdoor rug range includes green and olive options that handle Australian summers and direct sun without fading.
How to Style a Green Rug
Pair with timber and natural materials
The classic Australian biophilic look. Green rug, timber coffee table, linen sofa, indoor plants, woven baskets, rattan accents. This combination works in almost any home and feels effortlessly current rather than trendy.
Layer with cream, white, and warm neutrals
Green rugs come alive against light backgrounds. Cream walls, white couches, oatmeal cushions, and natural linen curtains all let the green rug be the visual anchor without competing for attention.
Add brass, gold, or bronze accents
Green and metallic finishes are a designer-favourite combination. A brass coffee table, gold pendant lights, or bronze drawer pulls lift a green-rug room straight away. This works particularly well with deeper greens like forest and emerald.
Mix with terracotta, mustard, or rust
Green rugs pair beautifully with warm earth-tone accents. A terracotta cushion, a mustard yellow throw, or rust-coloured ceramics on the coffee table all complement green without competing with it. This combination feels boho, eclectic, and relaxed.
Go bold with deep navy or dark charcoal walls
For a dramatic library or study look, pair a forest or emerald green rug with deep navy or charcoal walls. Add brass lighting and leather furniture and you've created the kind of room that feels expensive without committing to expensive furniture. Our charcoal rug collection can complement adjoining rooms in this scheme.
Don't be afraid to lean monochromatic
A sage green rug, sage cushions, eucalyptus and olive plants, and pale sage walls can create a beautifully cohesive look. Monochromatic schemes feel calming, considered, and boutique-hotel sophisticated.
Materials and Construction
Polyester and polypropylene green rugs
The most practical choice for everyday rooms. Soft, durable, easy to clean, and affordable. Most of our designer green rugs from the Pierre Cardin range fall into this category, including some standout sage and olive colourways.
Wool green rugs
The investment piece. Wool naturally takes green dye beautifully, producing rich, deep tones that don't fade. Wool green rugs are particularly suited to formal living rooms, libraries, and master bedrooms. They look better with age and last decades.
Machine washable green rugs
For dining rooms, kids' rooms, kitchens, and homes with pets. Our Peri 100 and Peri 110 ranges include green and olive options that handle real life and go straight in the washing machine when they need cleaning.
Flat-weave and low-pile green rugs
Easy to clean, durable, and modern in feel. Suit dining rooms, hallways, kitchens, and contemporary minimalist interiors. Also work well outdoors.
Plush and shaggy green rugs
Maximum comfort underfoot. Particularly suited to bedrooms and cosy family living spaces where softness matters more than practicality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are green rugs in style in 2026?
Yes. Green is one of the most popular rug colours in Australian interior design right now, particularly in shades like sage, olive, and forest. Unlike trend colours that come and go, green has held its appeal across decades and is now considered a sophisticated near-neutral by most interior designers.
What colours go best with a green rug?
Green pairs beautifully with cream, white, oatmeal, beige, terracotta, mustard yellow, navy blue, charcoal, brass, gold, and most timber tones. The shade of green influences which combinations work best. Sage works with soft warm neutrals; emerald works with rich jewel tones and metallics; olive works with earthy, lived-in palettes.
Will a green rug make my room feel smaller?
Not necessarily. Light greens like sage and mint actually make rooms feel larger by adding lightness without going pure white. Deeper greens like forest and emerald can ground a room visually but in smaller spaces, balance them with light walls, light furniture, and good lighting to keep the space feeling open.
Are green rugs versatile or do they limit my decor choices?
Sage, olive, and muted greens are surprisingly versatile and function close to neutrals. Brighter greens like emerald and lime are more committal but reward bold styling. If you're worried about commitment, start with sage. If you want something more dramatic, forest and emerald reward confident styling.
What size green rug should I get?
It depends on the room. For most living rooms, 200x290cm or 240x340cm is the standard. For larger open-plan rooms, 300x400cm. For a queen bedroom, 200x290cm under the lower two-thirds of the bed; for a king, step up to 240x340cm. Visit our Auburn or Lansvale showroom for personal sizing advice.
Will my green rug fade in direct sunlight?
High-quality green rugs hold their colour well, but any rug placed in direct, prolonged sunlight will eventually fade. Wool green rugs in particular are colour-fast for years. To extend the life of any rug colour, rotate it every few months and consider window treatments that filter harsh direct sunlight during peak hours.
Do green rugs work with grey walls or grey couches?
Yes, particularly olive and sage greens. The earthy tones in olive and the grey undertones in sage harmonise naturally with cool grey palettes. Avoid pairing very warm greens (yellow-toned olives) with very cool greys, as the temperature contrast can feel jarring.
Can I get a designer green rug?
Yes. Several pieces in our Pierre Cardin designer collection include green tones, particularly in the Vendome and Villette ranges with traditional medallion patterns where green appears alongside cream and gold. Visit our showrooms to see them in person.
Do you deliver green rugs across Australia?
Yes. Free Australia-wide delivery on all rug orders over $50. Sydney metro orders can opt for express delivery for 1 to 3 business day arrival. See our Sydney rug collection for express delivery options and showroom pickup.
