Riverside Reserve - Mona Vale - 17mm Cut Pile Carpet

Mona Vale is the darkest colour Riverside Reserve is made in: a very deep charcoal with a green cast that keeps it from reading as a hard, dead black. Laid at 17.0mm it becomes something quite dramatic: the long pile gives a charcoal this deep a visible nap, so the floor changes tone slightly as you move across the room, which is an effect you simply do not get from a shorter carpet. It is made for a home theatre, a dark-walled main bedroom or a formal room where the floor is meant to recede completely. Rosebery is the other dark in the range and the warmer, sagier one, which will sit better with olive or timber tones. Two honest warnings on a charcoal this deep: lint and pet hair are far more visible than on any mid-tone, and in a small room with little natural light it can feel heavy. Construction is a Belgotex tufted cut pile in 100% stainproof solution dyed nylon on a FusionBac backing. Deep charcoals are unforgiving of surface dyeing, where sunlight can grey out an exposed edge within a few years; here the pigment is part of the filament, so the colour stays consistent across the whole floor.

It is also where the trade-off is most visible, and it should be said plainly: a very dark colour in a very deep pile shows footprints and vacuum tracks more than any other combination in the catalogue, and it is not a carpet for stairs or a high-traffic hallway.
