Swish Oak Natura - French Carbon - 14/3mm Engineered Oak Flooring

French Carbon is the darkest decor in the Natura range and the coolest of the dark options. It is a deep charcoal grey with a brown undertone carried through the grain, approaching near-black on the darker boards while staying recognisably timber rather than painted. Beside Fiano Brown the difference is immediate: Fiano is warm chocolate, this is smoked grey. Its closest relative across the Swish oak collection is Urban Antique Oak in the Wideboard range, although French Carbon is flatter and far less knotty. Choose it for a dramatic, contemporary, high-contrast interior; do not choose it for a small dim room, where it will simply make the space feel smaller.

A near-black floor is a design decision more than a practical one, and it needs to be paired deliberately: white or very pale walls, generous glazing and enough floor area for the darkness to read as grounding rather than oppressive. It conceals dark scuffs, water marks and the general grime of a busy entry extremely well. What it does not conceal is dust, lint, sand and light-coloured pet hair, all of which are obvious within a day of cleaning. Choose it with open eyes if you have a white dog or a sandy back yard.

The Swish Oak Natura board is a 14mm engineered oak plank carrying a 3mm layer of genuine sawn oak over a cross-bonded core, cut to 190 x 1900mm with a micro-bevelled edge that gives each board a defined shadow line. It is a Tongue and Groove profile rather than a click system, so it can be glued down to the slab or floated over an acoustic underlay depending on your substrate, acoustic requirements and budget. Being real oak, the 3mm wear layer can be sanded back and recoated during the floor life, which a laminate or hybrid simply cannot offer, though a 4mm veneer such as the Wideboard range allows more of those resurfacing cycles. Allow time for the packs to acclimatise in the room before installation starts.

Every board is produced to the E1 emission standard with VOC content under 5ppm, which keeps the floor a low contributor to indoor air quality once it is down. Because the surface is genuine oak, expect visible variation in colour, figure and grain between boards, and expect the floor to age and change tone with sunlight over time. That is the nature of real timber and part of why it looks the way it does, but it does mean a screen image can only ever be indicative.
