Fiano Brown Herringbone - 14/3mm Swish Oak Natura Engineered Oak Flooring

Fiano Brown is the warm mid-brown of the Natura Herringbone range, and the swatch backs the name up. It is a rich caramel-to-tobacco brown with strongly contrasting grain, darker knots and distinct amber lights running through the lighter boards. Set beside French Carbon it is obviously brown rather than charcoal, and set beside French Natural it is several shades deeper and less golden. Of the six decors this is the one with the most visible figure. The grain reads from across the room, which gives a herringbone layout real texture rather than just pattern.

Mid-to-dark browns are the practical middle ground for a busy household. They do not show fine dust the way a pale floor does, and they do not show lint and footprints the way a very dark floor does. Fiano Brown suits period homes, warmer paint palettes and brass or aged-bronze hardware, and it holds its own in a room with a lot of natural light where a paler floor can wash out entirely. If you are running dark joinery, it is worth laying a sample against the cabinet door before committing, because two similar browns sitting side by side rarely flatter each other.

A word on the installation, because it matters more here than with a straight plank floor. Herringbone is glue down only: the geometry relies on every block being bonded to the subfloor, and it cannot be floated over underlay under any circumstances. It is also a slower, more demanding job than laying planks. The subfloor has to be flat and dry, the centre line has to be set out precisely before the first block is bonded, and the perimeter needs cutting and fitting by hand. Budget for a longer install and an installer who has laid pattern floors before.

Swish Oak Natura Herringbone is a 14/3mm engineered oak block floor: a 3mm layer of real European oak bonded to a cross-laminated engineered core, cut to 148 x 888mm blocks with a micro-bevelled edge and a tongue and groove profile. The engineered core is what makes a pattern floor of this size practical in an Australian climate, because it moves far less across the grain than a solid block of the same dimensions. Each pack covers 1.0514 m² across eight blocks and weighs around 10kg, and the range carries an E1 rating at less than 5ppm for formaldehyde emissions. Like every timber floor, engineered included, it must be delivered and left to acclimatise in the room it will live in before a single block goes down. Skipping that step is the most common cause of problems later.

Eco Flooring Systems source their oak from responsibly managed forests, and the engineered build uses a great deal less slow-growing oak per square metre than a solid block floor of the same wear layer. Real timber also varies from block to block and will shift tone as it ages under light, which is the point of a natural floor rather than a fault in it.
