Swish Native Hardwood - Blackbutt Neat - 14/3mm Australian Hardwood Flooring

Neat is the middle grade of the Swish Native Hardwood range, and choosing it over Blackbutt Natural is a decision about feature rather than colour. The swatch shows the same pale honey blonde with its soft warm-pink undertone and fine straight grain, but the overall read is calmer: fewer and smaller knots, less gum vein and noticeably less tonal jump from board to board. Put a Neat pack next to a Natural pack and the colour family is identical — what differs is how much is going on. It also comes on a narrower 136mm board than Natural's 189mm, which tightens the look further.

It is worth being precise about what Neat means, because Natural, Neat and Select read like colour names and are nothing of the sort. They are grades — a description of how much natural feature the boards carry, not what shade they are. Eco Flooring Systems publish Neat as a clean ABC grade veneer, one step tidier than the ABCD grade used for Natural. In practice that means the boards with the heaviest gum vein, the largest knots and the strongest colour swings are filtered out before the pack is made up. The timber is the same species and broadly the same colour family; you are simply turning the volume down on the feature.

This is the grade to choose when you want a timber floor that behaves like a background rather than a feature. Calm blonde hardwood on a 136mm board suits apartments, smaller rooms, hallways and any interior where joinery, stone or art is meant to carry the scheme. It still carries the full 3mm hardwood wear layer that Natural does, so you are not trading durability for tidiness — only feature. The trade-off worth knowing is the other way round: a cleaner floor shows individual scratches a little more plainly than a busy one does.

Here is what you are actually buying. Swish Native Hardwood is an engineered board, not a solid one: a wear layer of Australian Blackbutt bonded to a cross-laminated engineered core, which is why the specification is written as 14/3mm (3mm hardwood wear layer) rather than as a single figure. This board runs 136mm wide by 1900mm long with a micro-bevelled edge and a tongue and groove profile, packs cover 1.55 m² over six boards, and it can be glued down or floated over underlay. The engineered core is the reason it can be laid over concrete slabs and in apartments where a solid strip floor would be difficult, and it moves far less with seasonal humidity than solid hardwood of the same width. It is still timber, though, so it must be delivered and acclimatised in the room before installation — that step is not optional on engineered boards any more than it is on solid ones. Remember that every board of a natural timber floor is different and that all timber shifts tone as it ages under light — Australian hardwoods in particular tend to deepen and warm over the first year or two. That is the character you are paying for rather than a flaw, but it does mean you should hold a physical sample in your own room rather than judging colour from a screen.
