Swish Oak Wideboard - Urban Antique Oak - 14/4mm Engineered Oak Flooring

Urban Antique Oak is the dark, cool end of the Swish Oak Wideboard range. The boards read as a smoky blue-grey over brown, close to charcoal in places, with large open knots, filled checks and heavy grain character left visible rather than sanded away. It is dramatic and genuinely rustic. Elegant Walnut Oak is the other dark decor here but is chocolate and warm, so the two rarely get confused once you see them side by side; the closer relative is French Carbon in the Natura range, which is similarly smoked but flatter and less knotty. Choose Urban Antique Oak for a bold industrial or heritage-warehouse look; avoid it if you want a calm, even floor.

This is a statement floor and it needs room and light to carry it. In a large open living area with good glazing the dark grey grounds the space beautifully; in a narrow hallway or a dim apartment it will close the room down. Practically, the mid-to-dark grey body and heavy knot character are very good at concealing scratches, dents and shoe marks, which suits a high-traffic household, but dust and pale pet hair show clearly on the darker boards. Pair it with white or pale grey walls, and avoid competing strongly patterned rugs.

The Swish Oak Wideboard construction pairs a 4mm sawn oak face with a stable engineered core for a 14mm board, sized at a broad 220 x 2200mm so fewer joins interrupt the floor. Micro-bevelled edges frame each plank, and the Välinge 5G locking profile allows a fully floating, glueless installation over underlay. The thickness of the oak layer matters more than any other number here. At 4mm there is enough solid timber above the core to allow repeated sanding and refinishing over the decades, so scratches, dents and dulled coatings are a maintenance job rather than a replacement job. As with all engineered timber, the packs need to sit in the room and acclimatise to its humidity before a board is cut, which adds lead time compared with a hybrid floor.

This range meets E1 low-emission requirements with VOC levels measured below 5ppm, so it is a sound choice where indoor air quality is a consideration. As with all real timber floors, individual boards differ in colour and grain, and the floor will change subtly with light exposure over the years, which is worth anticipating around rugs and furniture that shade parts of the surface. None of that is a defect. It is simply what natural oak does, and it is why a physical sample beats any photograph. Supply and install available across Sydney.
