Look past the word Select and check the specification, because in this range it signals two things at once. On colour, the swatch is the familiar Blackbutt palette — warm blonde with a pinkish-tan cast and fine straight grain — with a light scattering of fine gum vein and gentle board-to-board variation, sitting at the calmer end of the range alongside Blackbutt Neat rather than the full-feature Blackbutt Natural. On construction, this is the only Blackbutt board here built as 14/2mm rather than 14/3mm, so the hardwood wear layer is 2mm instead of 3mm.

Two things change when you move to Select, and only one of them is grade. Natural, Neat and Select are grades rather than colours — they describe how much knot, gum vein and board-to-board colour variation the floor carries, not what shade it is. Select sits at the calmer end alongside Neat rather than at the full-feature end where Natural sits. The second change is construction: Select is built as a 14/2mm board, with a 2mm hardwood wear layer, where both Natural and Neat carry 3mm. That makes Select the entry point into the range. The surface is the same genuine Australian hardwood, but a thinner wear layer can be resanded fewer times over the life of the floor, and we are not going to quote a number for that because it depends entirely on the installer and how much material each pass removes. In fairness, one note on the supplier's own published grade text for Select: it duplicates the wording used for Neat, so we have described the grade from the specification and the physical swatch rather than repeat a line we cannot stand behind.

For most homes that distinction matters less than it sounds. A 2mm Australian hardwood surface on a 136mm board wears the same way day to day, takes the same care and looks the same underfoot; the difference only shows up if and when a future owner wants the floor machine-sanded back. If you expect to resand more than occasionally over the decades, Neat or Natural with their 3mm layers are the better long-term buy. If you want genuine Australian Blackbutt in a quiet grade and a well-proportioned width, this is the sensible starting point in the range.

Here is what you are actually buying. Swish Native Hardwood is an engineered board, not a solid one: a wear layer of Australian Blackbutt bonded to a cross-laminated engineered core, which is why the specification is written as 14/2mm (2mm hardwood wear layer) rather than as a single figure. This board runs 136mm wide by 1900mm long with a micro-bevelled edge and a tongue and groove profile, packs cover 1.55 m² over six boards, and it can be glued down or floated over underlay. The engineered core is the reason it can be laid over concrete slabs and in apartments where a solid strip floor would be difficult, and it moves far less with seasonal humidity than solid hardwood of the same width. It is still timber, though, so it must be delivered and acclimatised in the room before installation — that step is not optional on engineered boards any more than it is on solid ones. Emissions are rated E1 at less than 5ppm, and the supplier product code for this board is BB136F142.

Eco Flooring Systems source the timber for this range from responsibly managed forests, and using Australian species means the hardwood underfoot has not been shipped across the world before it reaches your floor. Engineering the board also stretches that hardwood a long way, concentrating it in the layer you actually walk on. Remember that every board of a natural timber floor is different and that all timber shifts tone as it ages under light — Australian hardwoods in particular tend to deepen and warm over the first year or two. That is the character you are paying for rather than a flaw, but it does mean you should hold a physical sample in your own room rather than judging colour from a screen.
