Read this one from the swatch rather than the name. Guardian Spotted Gum is a greyed taupe-brown with pale cream boards mixed through it, and the plank-to-plank variation is the widest in the range. Real spotted gum lays honey, amber and chocolate; this is a cooled, washed-back interpretation of it. If you want the warm version of the species, Blackbutt and Fertile Oak are the two warm boards here.
The variation is a genuine advantage in a busy house. Scratches, sand and the odd dropped pan disappear into a floor that already changes tone every few boards. It is also the most forgiving choice over an uneven old subfloor, because the eye reads the pattern rather than the plane.
Open several packs at once and dry-lay a few square metres before you fix anything. With this much spread between the palest and darkest boards, shuffling across packs is the difference between a floor that looks natural and one that looks blotchy.
Boards are 1500 x 228mm, six per 2.052m2 pack, 21.8kg. Construction is a 5mm rigid SPC core with 1.5mm IXPE acoustic underlay bonded on, finished matt with a four-sided micro bevel so each plank still reads as a plank. Slip resistance is P4 on the wet pendulum test to AS 4586:2013, and residential use is covered by a 25 year limited structural warranty.
