Blackbutt - 14/3mm Pioneer Satin Engineered Timber Flooring

This is real Australian blackbutt, not an oak print with an Australian name on it. The Godfrey Hirst Pioneer range is faced with genuine Australian species timber veneer, so what you get is the actual thing: a pale golden board with a soft olive cast and the low, even grain contrast that made blackbutt the default Sydney floor for twenty years. Light enough to keep a room bright, warm enough never to feel clinical, and neutral enough that it does not date with a colour trend.

Satin is the smoother, finer of the two Pioneer finishes. The surface is left flat rather than brushed, which reads as more formal and more contemporary, and it comes on a narrower 136mm board than the brushed version's 180mm, worth knowing, because narrower boards suit smaller rooms and hallways where a wide plank can look heavy. Boards are supplied in nested random lengths, which lays up looking like a genuine timber floor rather than a repeating pattern, though it does mean the set-out is worked out on site.

Underneath the veneer is a 14mm multiply board with a 3mm wear layer, thick enough to be sanded back and recoated two or three times across the life of the floor, which no hybrid, laminate or vinyl can do at any price. It installs with Insta Clic®, so a genuine timber floor goes down as a floating floor without glue or nails. Finished in UV cured lacquer with a micro bevel edge.

Godfrey Hirst back it with a 25 year timber limited residential warranty. Slip rating P2 under AS 4586: if the floor needs a higher slip rating, the brushed finish is rated P3.
