Auburn Ridge - Waratah - 11.5mm Wool Loop Pile Carpet

Waratah is the darkest colour in the Auburn Ridge range: a deep charcoal-grey carrying a fleck that keeps it from reading as a solid block of dark. That fleck matters more here than anywhere else in the palette, because it is what gives a dark carpet visible texture instead of turning the floor into a shadow. It is a strong, architectural choice: excellent in media rooms, studies and apartments with a lot of glass, and confident against white walls, black steel and dark timber. Be clear-eyed about the practicalities though. A charcoal shows pale lint and light pet hair more readily than a mid tone, so it rewards regular vacuuming. If that is a concern, Lilly Pilly gives you similar forgiveness in a warmer, lighter mushroom.

Auburn Ridge is a wool loop pile by Belgotex, tufted into a braid-like plaid and accentuated with multi-toned yarn. On Waratah the multi-tonal yarn is doing the heavy lifting: the braided structure catches light across its raised sections, so the charcoal shifts as you move through the room rather than sitting inert. It is made in Australia, from yarn proven in local conditions.

This is 100% wool, and wool behaves differently to the synthetics. Its natural crimp gives the pile genuine resilience, so it springs back instead of matting into traffic lanes. It is naturally flame resistant with no added treatment, it helps regulate humidity in a closed room, and it holds warmth in a way nylon never does, noticeable on a winter morning. The honest counterpoint is care: a wool carpet cannot be cleaned with bleach the way a solution dyed nylon can, so spills need prompt blotting and a wool-appropriate cleaner, and a dark wool in particular benefits from a professional clean every few years.

One measuring consideration: the roll runs 3.66m wide, narrower than the 4.0m nylon ranges, so wider rooms will carry a seam. In a dark carpet a badly placed seam is more noticeable than in a pale one, so it is worth agreeing the join position on site before the carpet is cut.
