Ornato - Spotted Gum - 5.3mm Looselay Vinyl Plank

A muted mid-brown with grey running through it, Ornato Spotted Gum reproduces the banded light-and-dark character of the native timber without the red that most people expect from Australian hardwood. Held against Sienna the distinction is immediate - Sienna is warm and red, Spotted Gum is cooler and more taupe - and against Blackbutt it is clearly a full shade or two deeper. That in-between tone is its strength: it reads as timber in a room full of warm finishes and as a neutral in a room full of cool ones. It is less convincing if you specifically want the honeyed, orange-brown spotted gum of an older polished floor, because this decor is deliberately restrained.

Spotted Gum is a common specification for hallways, open-plan living and small commercial spaces - all areas where a floor takes concentrated traffic in defined paths. Looselay suits that pattern well, because the planks are laid rather than locked or glued, and the handful of boards at a doorway or in front of a counter that wear first can be pulled and replaced individually. Nothing needs to be cut, nothing adjacent is disturbed, and the repair is over in minutes rather than being deferred until the whole room can be redone.

Each plank measures 178 x 1219mm and is 5.3mm thick, with a fibreglass core layer through the body of the board delivering the dimensional stability that a click system would otherwise have to enforce mechanically. A 0.50mm PU wear layer sits over the decor, finished with a NanoSilver antibacterial coating, and the edges are squared so boards meet cleanly with no bevel. It is a looselay, glueless installation, with minimal adhesive applied over large open areas. Slip rating is R10, sound and heat insulation are both excellent, and the floor is suitable over underfloor heating. It is moisture resistant, but a looselay floor is not a waterproofing system, so please talk to us before specifying it in a bathroom or laundry.
